Custom light shaping optics for LED illumination, solar concentration, and display applications
OEA designs non-imaging optical systems that control and shape light distribution for a wide range of illumination applications. From TIR collimating optics for LEDs to domed Fresnel concentrators and backlit display light guides, our designs maximize efficiency and achieve precise intensity distributions.
Total Internal Reflection Collimator
Collimating optics for LEDs typically require complex geometry to achieve efficient flux transfer. The TIR optic consists of an inner refractive lens and an outer total internal reflection reflector, designed to be manufactured as a single solid optic. This approach maximizes light collection efficiency while producing a well-collimated output beam.

Light Distribution Shaping
LED lenses are designed to reshape the native Lambertian light distribution of an LED for various lighting applications. By tailoring the lens geometry, the output intensity distribution can be optimized for uniform illumination, spot lighting, or other application-specific patterns.

Solar Concentrator & Line Focus
A domed Fresnel lens allows for better optical performance over a wider acceptance angle compared to a flat Fresnel lens. These types of lenses are used extensively as solar concentrators. A domed cylindrical Fresnel lens variant creates a line focus, useful for linear solar concentration and specialized illumination applications.

Display Light Guide
A wedge lens design for improving the efficiency of a display light guide, based on technology developed for improving backlit display uniformity. The wedge geometry redirects light from edge-mounted sources across the display panel with high uniformity, and also has applications in 3D projection displays without glasses.
